Here’s how it works in Mississippi: as long as your title is clear and in your name, we can usually complete the donation, arrange a free tow, and transfer responsibility. The car does not have to be drivable—we regularly pick up vehicles from Jackson, Gulfport, Hattiesburg, Southaven, Biloxi, Tupelo, and rural areas from the Delta to the Pine Belt. Once it’s picked up, the charity becomes responsible for the vehicle. You’ll want to notify the Mississippi Department of Revenue or your local county tax collector of the transfer so you’re off the hook going forward. In return, you receive a tax receipt from Heritage for the Blind to support services for people who are blind or visually impaired.
How to get your free pickup scheduled
1. Check that you still have the Mississippi title
Look for your Mississippi vehicle title and make sure your name is listed correctly and there are no unexpected liens. The registration expiration doesn’t matter here—the title does. If the title is in your name and not signed over to anyone else, you’re already most of the way to being able to donate, even if the tag is months or years out of date.
2. Tell us about your car’s situation and expired tags
Contact Magnolia Motors Gift and mention that your registration is expired or has lapsed. Share the basics: year, make, model, location (for example, in Jackson, Biloxi, Olive Branch, or a rural property), and whether it runs. We’ll confirm that the expired registration is not a problem and walk you through any Mississippi-specific paperwork you might need to sign.
3. Schedule your free Mississippi pickup (running or not)
Once we confirm the title details, we arrange a free tow anywhere in Mississippi—whether the car is in a driveway in Madison, an apartment lot in Hattiesburg, or a farm road near Yazoo City. You do not have to renew registration or pay back fees first. The tow company will meet you, verify ownership, and load the vehicle, even if it hasn’t moved in years.
4. Sign the title and hand over the keys (if you have them)
At pickup, you’ll sign the Mississippi title over to the charity according to state requirements. The tow driver will show you where to sign or follow the instructions we provide ahead of time. If you’ve lost the keys, let us know in advance—this usually isn’t a dealbreaker. After signing, the vehicle becomes the charity’s responsibility, not yours.
5. Notify Mississippi and keep your records clean
After the tow, we recommend you notify your local county tax collector or the Mississippi Department of Revenue that you donated the car and transferred ownership. This is a simple but important step to avoid future tax notices, tag fee letters, or liability. Keep your copy of the title transfer or pickup receipt with your tax records for added peace of mind.
6. Receive your tax receipt from Heritage for the Blind
After the donation is processed, Heritage for the Blind will mail you a tax receipt. In most cases, it will reflect at least a $500 deduction, and if the vehicle sells for more, you’ll use IRS Form 1098-C to claim the higher amount. Your expired registration will not reduce your tax benefit—the donation value is based on what the vehicle ultimately brings, not on your tag status.
Potential complications to watch for
Title not in your name or missing entirely
Tip: Expired registration is usually fine, but a missing or mismatched title can slow things down. If the title is lost, you may need to request a replacement from the Mississippi Department of Revenue first. If it’s still in a previous owner’s name, we’ll explain what’s possible and what documentation might be needed before we can complete the donation.
Liens or loans still showing on the Mississippi title
Tip: If your title lists a bank, finance company, or other lienholder, we may need proof that the loan is paid off or a lien release. Without that, the state may not allow a clean transfer. Check the front of your title before scheduling pickup, and if you see a lien, gather any payoff letters so we can move your donation forward smoothly.
Abandoned or HOA-towed situations with unclear ownership
Tip: If the vehicle has been sitting at an apartment complex, HOA property, or someone else’s land around places like Flowood or Gulfport, make sure you’re still the legal owner and allowed to move it. We need permission from the title holder, not just the property manager. Clearing this up ahead of time prevents delays and last-minute cancellations with the tow company.
Not officially reporting the transfer to Mississippi
Tip: Once you donate, failing to notify your local county tax collector or the Mississippi Department of Revenue can lead to confusion if tickets or taxes pop up later.
