Cancel insurance only after your donated car has been picked up and the title has been handed off. Do not cancel early. If something happens before transfer, you could still own the car and have no coverage. Some states also penalize an insurance lapse on a vehicle that is still registered.
Before you call, handle plates and registration first if Mississippi requires it; confirm the rule with the Mississippi DMV. Ask your insurer to use the pickup/title-transfer date and request any prorated refund.
The right cancellation sequence
Confirm pickup and title hand-off
Before making any insurance change, make sure the vehicle is no longer in your possession. Confirm the pickup happened, the keys and vehicle were released, and the signed title was handed off to the authorized pickup contact. Keep the donation receipt or pickup paperwork with the exact date. If pickup is still pending, keep coverage active until this step is complete.
Handle plates or registration
Next, finish any plate or registration task your state requires before insurance cancellation. Some states require surrendering plates or canceling registration first. Other states allow you to cancel coverage after the title transfer or sale/donation notice. If a plate or registration step applies to you, complete it and keep proof before you call the insurer.
Call with the donation date
Call your insurance company with the donation date, the vehicle identification number, and your policy number. Tell the representative the car was donated through Magnolia Motors Gift and that pickup and title hand-off are complete. Ask the insurer to make the change effective on the pickup/title-transfer date, not a later billing date. Write down the representative’s name and the call date.
Remove or cancel coverage
Tell the insurer exactly what you need changed. If you have a multi-car policy, remove only the donated vehicle and keep the rest of the policy active. If this was your only insured car, cancel the policy after the transfer is complete. Continuous-coverage note: if you are replacing the car or still need to drive, arrange coverage before you drive another vehicle.
Request any prorated refund
Ask whether you prepaid any premium beyond the effective cancellation date. If yes, request a prorated refund for the unused time. Confirm how the refund will be issued, where it will be sent, and whether any automatic payment needs to be stopped. Do not assume the refund is automatic; ask for it clearly during the same call.
Keep written confirmation
Before you end the call, ask for written confirmation by email, mail, or your online account. The confirmation should show the vehicle removed or the policy canceled, the effective date, and any refund details. Save it with your title copy, pickup receipt, plate or registration proof, and tax documents for the donation.
What to keep afterward
Keep one folder for the donation and insurance change. Include the signed title copy if you have one, the pickup receipt, any plate or registration confirmation, your insurer’s cancellation or removal notice, and refund records. Also save notes from the call, including the date, time, and representative name. If you need a separate ownership-reporting checklist, use our Release of Liability After Donating Your Car guide. These records help you answer later billing, registration, insurance, or tax questions without rebuilding the timeline.
Common questions
Can I cancel if pickup is tomorrow?
No. Keep coverage active until the car has been picked up and the signed title has been handed off. A car that is still in your possession, or still legally yours, can still be involved in a loss. Canceling early can leave you uncovered and may create registration issues.
What if I have two cars on one policy?
Ask the insurer to remove only the donated vehicle. Do not cancel the whole policy unless that is what you intend. Confirm the remaining cars, drivers, coverages, and billing stay active. Use the pickup/title-transfer date as the effective date for removing the donated car.
What if this was my only insured car?
After pickup and title hand-off are complete, you can ask the insurer to cancel the policy. If you are replacing the vehicle or will drive another car, make sure you have the coverage you need before driving. Ask for written cancellation confirmation and any refund details.
Will I get money back from my insurer?
You may receive a prorated refund if you prepaid premium past the effective cancellation or removal date. Refund handling depends on your policy and insurer. Ask directly during the call, confirm the mailing address or payment method, and keep the written refund or account confirmation.
